In light of what I know now, I can understand how the mind is able to accomplish such a feat. From what we have read, its easy to see cases and examples of how people tend to consciously and subconsciously forget memories that are emotionally charged and traumatic. This is referred to as selective amnesia in the field of psychology.

Though this is a negative example, it still shows how powerful memories can be to associate themselves with seemingly insignificant things like the color of ceiling designs and food names.
